Organisation of an annual fund-raiser

Picture
If you’re not used to organising events, the amount of work involved can see daunting. Even if you’re experienced at the task, the length of the ‘to do’ list can seem endless and the number of itty-bitty, but necessary jobs can make you want to scream at times. At Green Spark, we’ve organised all sorts of events from national conferences, trade fairs and community consultation, to sponsored walks and fund-raising concerts. We were able to put these skills to good use when Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust was left without a member of staff to take over the reins of organising the ‘Walk 4 Wildlife’ event following the departure of their community fund-raiser to pastures new.
The Context
This annual sponsored walk is a fun day for Trust staff and members to get together, walk through some of the Trust's stunning nature reserves, see the fantastic work made possible by their membership subscriptions, and to raise further funds for Trust projects. In addition to re-invigorating members' support, each event also offers plenty of publicity opportunities to tell the wider public about the Trust's work and hopefully recruit  more supporters who can donate time and/or membership fees.

Green Spark...
took over the ‘to do’ list: organising the whole event from researching the route to arranging food stalls, liaising with other Trust departments and with external organisations involved, planning and writing an email marketing campaign aimed at Trust members, generating publicity in the local media, and even leading a guided walk on the day.
The Result
The whole event ran smoothly on the day and participants enjoyed themselves despite a very rainy start! They were astonished by the fascinating history and wildlife of the walk’s location (Robinswood Hill for those who know Gloucester), a place which they thought they knew so well. The general agreement was they would definitely return for another visit and to re-do the walk. The walkers then joined in with a special event taking place at the end of the walk, a 'fun day' with music and all sorts of activities to entice more people to come and discover the Hill.
